steer head
A steer head from a boneyard behind a cattle farm in Coos County, NH.

A boneyard is a site typically in an out-of-the-way location on a farm where dead animals are left for wild carnivores and scavengers to pick away at them.  While disposing of dead stock in this way is easier than digging a hole and burying the animal properly, it also "trains" local coyotes to develop a taste for livestock.  This can create problems for the farmer and for other livestock owners who live in the coyote's territory.
